United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph —Copyright, Ottawa, December 31. At a recent conference of representatives of shipping companies engaged in the North Atlantic freight traffic between Br tain and Canada it was deioded to increase the westbound transport charges by 53 ‘per cent.

jj The Ottawa Board of Trade has entered a protest against this proposal, and is inviting all Canadian shipping companies to resist the increase, which, it is urged, will tend to divert business to United States factories and nullify tbs benefits of British preference. The Dominion Government is to be asked to co-operate with the various Boards of Trade in Canada in the matter.
