Dunedin, Jannary 2. On Friday last, a married man named John Modorrie. aged 36 a resident of Green Island, left home to go Galling. He did cot return that evening, and a search party on Saturday morning tound his body on Green Island* beach where it had apparently been washed hy the sea. , , Ohrlstohnr ch, January 1.

Whilst oat driving yesterday afternoon Mrs Catherine Williams. 38 years of ago, wife of William Goo. Williams, of Lin wood, was thrown out of a dogcart, bhe was removed to the hospital, where she died yesterday evening. A six months old child in her arms escaped unhurt. , „ Wellington, January 3. In the dying hours of the old year a tragedy occurred on the high seas near Wellington. The steamer AngloSaxon, which had been in Wellington about a week left for London on Friday at 5 p.m. When four hours out an explosion occurred in the engine-oom. The evaporator exploded with a report like a cannon shot. The chief -engineer, Francis Lawrence, who was bending over the evaporator, received such fearful injuries that he died almost immediately. The vessel at once returned to Wellington, where an inquest was held to-day. The Coroner found a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attachable to anyone. Wairoa, January 3.

A half oasts committed spicide at Nuhaka yesterday by hanging himself to a manuka tree. Dannevirke, Janaary o. On Friday afternoon the three and a half year old son of Matthew Price, living at Tiratn, was drowned in the Manawata river.
