THE BRITISH NAVY.

MR KBIR HARDIE WILL SETTLE THINGS.

United Association. —By Electric Telegraph,—Copyright. • London, March 29.

Mr Keir Bardie,’ at Merthyr Tydvil, said that the effect of Mr Asquith’s speech in the House of Commons was such as he had never seen before, resulting in a scare and making it easy for the Government to beat down the opposition in its own ranks to further expenditure on tbe Navy. Mr Hardie announced that inembers of the Labour Party were going to Germany at Whitsuntide to tell Germany that “You and we have no quarrel. ” The Spectator declares that no part of tbe Empire will grudge New Zealand the honour of leading the way. It was appropriate that the Island Dominion should be the first to turn its thoughts to ships.

Christchurch, March 30,

Yesterday Mr T. E. Taylor, M.P., sent the following cable message to the Prime Minister of Great Britain: “Cabinet’s offer of a Dreadnought was made without the consultation of Parliament or the people. There is an increasing feeling that the offer was unconstitutional and an unfortunate interference with British party politics. We believe Parliament would gladly increase the naval subsidy.”
