AN AUSTRALIAN SCULPTOR.

At a banquet to Mr Bertram MaoKennal, the Australian sculptor, the guests ; included a number of Australian ex-Qovernora and artists. Lord Tennyson, presiding, referred to Mr MaoKennal as the pioneer of a noble and individual Australian art vet to arise which would be *a glory to the Commonwealth and reinvigorate British art. Mr MaoKennal, replying, said the mystery of the bush with its vase distances would some day inspire a great art effort. The Federal capital would afford opportunity to create a monument to federation, proving that this generation was full of belief in the greatness of the nation yet to come.
