MILITARY TOURNAMENT?

The King's Birthday in Palmers ton North will bo fitly celebrated by the big military tournament on the Show 'Grounds. It promises to be the largest of its kind yet held in Now Zealand and the programme includes a number of exciting competitions and spectacular displays. The artillery display by the D Battery will be greatly improved as the battery are bringing their trained horses* Last year the horses were provided locally and the men were therefore at a great disadvantage. The "musical ride" calls for nervo and good horsemanship. At the tournaments hold at the Koyal ArgieuLtural Hall, London, this event is the most popular on the programme. It requires twenty minutes to perform and resembles a set of lancers as dauced iu a ball-room, and it concludes with the column charging down the ring with lances at the "em-. :e. " The Mauawatu Mounted Rifle will give an exhibition of lance zeroises, the first performance ] of iu- kind by a Volunteer corps in Now Zealand, tho only other occasion on which it was given being during the visit of tho Imperial Troops. The lances and pendants used for this exercise hayo been specially procured from tho New South Wales Government, and belong to tho crack Now South Wales Lancer Corps. Tho loeal squad has been in practice for somo mouths. In the bavouet fight there are 12 corps compering, comprising 103 mou, tent-pegging 30 entries, heads and post 30 entries, tug-of-war 13 teams, tent-pitching and striking 14 teams, wrestling cu horseback 12 teams, and in the Balaclava melee or cockade fight, 12 entries. The Lloyd-Lindsay competition will bo fought out between practically tho same teams that competed at the recent A. and P. Show.
