HOCKEY.

(By “Bully.”) A roturu match between Smokers and Nou-smokors was played on Wednesday last on Mrs Humphrey’s grounds. An exciting game eventuated, and some excellent work was put in by both teams. The Nongraokors did not have quite their Strongest team, two of their front rankers being absent, but gave a very good account of thomnselves. The Smokers in the first spell played well together, the combiantion displayed ‘by their forwards being a treat to watch, and quite overpowered their 'opponents. T. Smith was in fine form and played a great game, notching four goals in quick succession in the first spoil. When half time was called the score stood Smokers 4, Non-smokers nil. It was not until the second spoil that the Non-smokers woke up to the fact that the Smokers were a little too strong for them. Then things began to hum. They bucked up and got on some good forward rushes and passed well, and so scored two goals in this spell. For the winners D. Smith (played the best game on the ground lor the forwards), Collins, Carr and Scrim - geour played well, goals being scored by Smith and Collins. For the losers Outfield, Fulton, Wilson and Nicol played well, goals being scored by Cowpcr and Fnlton. This now makes both teams equal, so the conqueror will bo played after the Wanganui and Palmerston North matches. It is very pleasing the way the club lias got on and to note the progress. Their play is totally different to what it was; they are learning "tho game slowly, but well, and will make a name for themelves. Although beaten, they come up smiling every time.
