THE FEDERAL HOUSE.
Per Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, July 4.
Mr T. Cook, Acting-Leader of the Opposition, resumed the debate on the Address-imßeply and characterised the conduct of the mail contract as consummate bungling. The representative of the .syndicate had lost the Government twelve months. Dealing with the imperial Conference, he said present relations with the Motherland were entirely satisfactory, and asked what was to be gained by the new secretariat arrangement ? Nothing could be more ludicrous than Government’s conduct with regard to the naval agreement. Very few people opposed the agreement and there was no doubt the Government majority wished to see it continued. Sir William Lyue, replying, said no time would be lost in submitting the tariff proposals, and defended Government’s action in connection with the mail contract.
