MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held last evening. Present. —The Mayor Dr. Skormau, Crs. Sutcliffe, McEldowney, Lyon, Hilton, Gould and Gibbousi

, Correspondence was dealt with as follows :-h

From A. Signal and Geo. Haigh, applications for position of borough ranger.—Appointment deferred. From J. F. Sicely, stating that as the borough will shortly require a considerable sum of money ho is prepared to procure same at a cheaper rate of interest than has already been quoted. —That letter be received and that Mr Sicely be informed that the matter is already in the hands of the Finance Committee.

From manager. Bank of New Zealand, stating that Council’s application for a limit of £4OOO overdraft has been approved.—Received. From Health Department, advising that the District Health Officer will confer with Council at an early date in regard to sanitary inspector’s salary.—Received. From Signal Bros., complaining that the Town Clerk reeommauded the advance ageilfc of the “Human Hearts” Company to pittrphise Reid’s coaches in lieu of theirs.— The Mayor reported that lie had attended to this complaint. From Miss Nicol, applying for use of western portion of park for Girls’ Hockey Club.—To be allowed the use of eastern side of park provided the ground was not engaged by the footballers.

From Oaraarn Chamber of Commerce, asking for information as to any subway or overbridge for passenger of dray traffic across railway line that maybe inexistence in your town.—Clerk to write stating that subway at Martou Railway Junction Was built by the Department., From E. W. Broad, applying for gas to be laid to his now house at “Burnside, ” just across the borough boundary.—The Gas Manager reported that applicant had ordered fittings, previous to Council resolving not to insfal gas ontisde the borough boundary Or. Gibbons moved and Or. Gould seconded, “that the matter having been previously arranged, the application be granted provided applicant pays all costs of installation. ” —Cr. ■ Sutcliffe moved an amendment, seconded by Cr. Hilton, “that the Council adhere to its former resolution not to supply gas to any outside the borough boundary and that the present application be refused. ’ The amendment was carried.

From Secretary Technical School, Marton, asking permission to lay drainage pipes from school ground across footpath in High Street.— Permission granted. Council also agreed to supply metal and spread game to the main entrance of school. From Clerk Mauawatu Licensing 'Committee, advising Council that all applications for pnolicaus’ licenses or renewals are adjourned Until sth September next. From A. Remnant, stating that borough water cart lias been altered and is now working satisfactorily, also giving estimate for drainage required on western portion of park. The cost of drainage and covering in drain \Vas estimated at £66 10s.— Tiie matter was referred back to the Park Committee.

From W. W. Hedges, churchwarden, application for license for St. Stephen’s Sunday School. —Granted. From Marton Fire Briagde, asking Council to iustal gas in the fire, engine room.—Or. Gibbons spoke ia support of the application which was granted on his proposition, seconded by Or.’McEldowney. From T. Boss and H. Hunt, asking that water tables in Robert Street receive attention. —Left to Works Committee. The Gas Manager recommended that 20 stages similar make to at a‘
