EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held last evening. Present : Messrs Piraui (chair), Spurdle, Dixon, Fraser, Purnell, and Oarson. Messrs Guthrie, Beuuott aud Smith wore granted leave of absence.

The following resignations were accepted! A Haurou, Ohingaiti ;.G. H. Powell, Stouey Greek; P. Mctfenaw, Taikoroa-; M. H. Stevens, St. John’s.

Leave absence was granted as follows: G. Kendall, Kawhatau ‘P. Banknlau, Asbhurst: J. Forgnssou, Makohaii; 0., E. Early;, College Street; E. H. Rodgers, Awahuri; G. S. Strack, Hawera; L. Snratt, Hawera; H. E. Mahoney, Clydesdale ; S. Strachan, Halcombo; L. J, McDonnell, Makirikiri. Tim following appointments wore confirmed: Mrs Williams, Mokoia : Miss P. Ingpen, Mataroa; ■ Mias Mahoney, Mangaweka; Miss K. Hill, Axiroa. Glen Orona.—Resolved to invito applications for a male teacher. Kata.—-Board to supply timber for fence if Committee supply labour. Hautapu.—Committee to bo appointed as recommended Pukeokahu. —Application to bo made for teacher’s residence.

Campbell Street.—From Committee, offering to finance drainage work provided amount is refunded within 13 mouths.—lt was resolved to apply to the Department for a grant for the work. " Pohaugina.—-Prom C. H. Hardley desiring to purchase section 8 Block IY. Pohangiua.—Resolved to reply that the Board has no power to sell p it can only lease the laud. Holiday.—Front Wanganui Committee, suggesting that Juno 3rd be a holiday instead of May 34th.—Resolved to reply that the Board concurs. . Stan way.—Resolved td inform the Committee that the Board will pay reasonable amount for cleaning out offices.,

Gibbons’ Scholar ship. —The _Bo ard approved the following conditions in connection with the Gibbous’ scholarships:—ln the month of December the Board will offer for competition to pupils attending any of its schools situated in the Raugitikoi County a Gibbons I ' scholarship of the annual value of £2O, tenable for two years; candidates must (a) obtain at least 75 per cent, of marks at the proficiency examination, (b) pass an easy practical examination in nature study and school horticulture, (c) pass also an easy written examination in the same subjects, and (d) must not bo over 14 years of age on the first day of the mouth in which the examination is held; the scholarship shall not be tenable with any other scholarship; candidates may* subject to the Consent of the Board, attend any secondary or district high school in the Wanganui education district, or some other such school as may be approved by Board, . Departmental.—From the Education Department ro payment of tcs,vhera’ salaries through Post Office; rd conveyance of children; re railway fares for teachers attending classes; re special grant for training of teachers. —Received. Grants.—From the Education Department notifying grants of £550 for school at Hamitangi and £llO for additions to Taikorea.

Halcombe.—From Committee, ask* iug for a grant for road to the teacher’s residence, also grant for minor repairs.—Besolved to grant £5 for the road, and to reply that the other work must be done out of capitation , . Technical.—Central District. —Mr Yarney reports that the attendance at Wanganui continues good, especially iirtlio trade classes; that work at Martou has begun under favorable circumstances, and that the building there is nearing completion'; that work has also lommeuced at Bulls, where lessons by Mr Grant and Mr Browne aro especially desired; and that good work is being done at Turakina, Huutorville and Taihape. Southern Distinct: Mr Amos reports that in his district there are now 30 classes attended by 310 pupils, the classes being conducted at Foifiling. Ashhiirst, Halcombe, Klmbolton, Buuuythorpo, Rougotea and Oolytou. Classes will probably bo started at Pohaugiua and Apiti. The Feifiliug classes, on the recommendation of the Department’s Inspector, have removed to more suitable buildings.
