The University Club was given till to-day to withdraw tho statement (the result of their match with Dunedin) that “ competent referees should ho appointed for senior matches. Tho club will not withdraw, and has written a letter to the Eugby Union asking it to point out the “ insulting words ”in the letter. At a meeting of tho committee of tho Canterbury Eugby Union to-night, a letter was read from tho New Zealand Union asking tho committee to hold'an immediate enquiry into the matter of players under tho jurisdiction of the Canterbury Union refusing to sign tho declaration as requested by tho New Zealand Union. Mr D. McGregor who previously had refused to sign tho document attended and stated ho was willing now to sign it at any time. In reply to a question, ho said his reason for refusing to sign the declaration :was that tho Eugby Union had never doubted his amateur status before and he saw no reason why they should doubt it this year. Ho. wished to say nothing about tho professional team and declined to divulge anything that might have taken place. He was prepared to -sign now simply because the other players were signing. It was agreed to forward McGregor’s replies to tho New Zealand U.iioa for their consideration.
