In connection with the statement made that contraband trade of French residents of the New Hebrides places British traders at a disadvantage, Sir John Forrest said that he hoped matters would be on a better footing when the Convention was in operation. The Federal Government vote of £SOO for the "assistance of British settlers was being used as a bonus on maize wherever the price obtained did not reach 6s. The bonus was given to make up the difilerence, and so far littlo_of the money had been used.
