Mayoralty.—W. J. B. Trewin, 432; W. J. Harford, 267 The following were elected councillors: J. Cobbe, 524 ;A. H. Atkinson, 483 ; J. W. Bramwell, 411, E. Goodbebere, 410; J. Darragli, 407; A. Richmond, 395 ; H Tolley, 381 ; S. W. Fitzherbert, 332; Theo.. West 320. The unsuccessful candidates were: A. Williamson, 300; F. E. Willis, 256; A. Thompson, 218; W. T. Bowater, 182; E. P. Smith, 12G. Informal, 44. Wellington, April 24.

Great interest was taken in the polling to-day for election of Mayor and Councillors for the City of Wellington and crowds gathered in the streets to view the posting of progress figures. Early in the evening it was clear that Eislop would defeat Wilford by a large majority and the victory for Hislop was so assured that final results were taken for granted, and the candidates addressed the electors. The final result was—Hislop 5658, Wilford 2963.

xYt Onslow Harkness was elected Mayor. Napier, April 24. . Tho Borough Council elections to-day created a greater amount of interest than on any former' occasion and the poll was a heavy one. For the majwal contest Mr J. Vigor Brown was returned by a majority of 285 over Mr S. Carnell, the present Mayor. A large crowd of people waited about till 10.55, when the mayoral election was announced, tho result being received with great cheering. Wanoanui, April 24. The Borough elections created greater interest than has been the case for many years. There was a very heavy poll and at its declaration many hundreds wero present despite the most stormy weatnor. Tho successful candidates were—MacAndrew, Bearp, Breeze, Lloyd, Coulson, McGregor, Robinson, Bock, McSherry. Auckland, April 24.

Myers (re-elected for third time) 4568, St. Clair 930, Richardson 673. Out of a roll of 16,110 only 6,251 voted.. Timartj, April 21.

Craigie was re-elected unopposed, and the new Council consists of five old and four new men, three old ones retiring. Gisborxe, April 24.

Considerable interest was taken in the contest for tho Mayoralty, which was chiefly fought out on the harbor question. W. D. Lysnar, a strong advocate of the outer harbor, ran against the sitting Mayor, J. Townley. The figures were—Townley 766, Lysnar 636. Invercabgill, April 21.

Mayoralties: Invercargill Central—W. B. Scandrett (re-elected) 1,044, J. Stead 520. South Invercargill—T, A. Cushen 436, G. R. Hilton 127. East Invercargill —W. Baird 124, J. A. Mitchell 87. Avenal—J. Ward 87, Hon. H. Feldwick 40. In the Central election the nine sitting Councillors who offered thomsel ves for re-election were returned. Winton — C. D. Moore 136, Kennedy 67. ~,,.

Palmerston N., April 25

.Probably never before in the history of Palmerston has such enthusiasm been displayed over a municipal election. Shortly before nine o'clock the Returning Officer announced the results to a largo crowd assembled. A ringing cheer went up when it was announced that Or. Essex was the victor by a majority of 122. The votes recoided were as follows:—R. Essex 1065, M. Cohen 943, E. O. Hurley 214. Council: H. Haydon, O. N. Clausen, J. Nash, W. Stubbs, E. J. Armstrong, D. Matheson, S. W. Luxford, A. E. Bennett and B. Holbein.

Mayoralty: Roes 442, Patterson 431. Council: Collett, Wratt, Ransom, Mclntyro, Haines, Johnston, Drnmniond, Thomson, Bain. Auckland, April 25. The City Council election resulted in the return of the old members with the addition of Messrs McKay, Somers and Dr. Stopford, the number of concillors having been increased -by three. The labour ticket was practically defeated though it included Br Stopford. Blenheim, April 25.

The Mayoral election was keenly contested and resulted: A. McCal lum 835, E. H. Penny, retiring mayor, 248, J. J. W. White 189. The Council election rosulted in the return of Messrs J. Brown, W. Carr, J. White, L. Griffiths, W. H. Macey, W. Ching, G. Patchett, J. McKinley and F. Birch. MARTQN.f, Unusual interest whs taken in the election at Marton. Over 150 additional votes wore recorded as compared with the last annual election. The result of Mayoral election was promptly announced by the Returning Officer, Mr R. Woodhouse, but it was nine o'clock before the voting for councillors ' was announced : Mayoral election: Sydney Skemian 183, John F. Sicoly 171; informal 6. Councillors: J. McEldowney 280, HJSutcliffo 213, A. Lvon 205, S. J. Gibbons 185, F. G. Hilton 177, A. J. Gould IG9. Unsuccessful candidates: W. Broad 1(51, E. Read 146, B. L. G. Goilo 139, F. Hunt 129, T. H." Ross 119. After the results were announced speeches were given by the , candidates amidst loud cheering. '

Dr. Skerman thsaked the electors for the support given him and expressed satisfaction that the contest had been conducted in such a good spirit and had had such a close finish. Ho explained that he did not come forward as an opponent of tho measures of Mr Sicely's ad- ■ ministration but in response to a requisition from friends which he did not feel justified in rofasing. He was exceedingly gratified to see so many ratepayers present taking such a keen interest in municipal matters and looked on it as a healthy sign and a contrast to former contests which iiad been characterised. by so much indifference to tiie affairs of tho town. He had not watched closely tho financial position of the borough, lately, but would now proceed to make himself acquainted with the position of affairs and carry on the bnsiness of the borough in a progressive and- economical way. .
