STEAMER INVERAN ASHORE.

Press Association. Wellington, April 24. I The steamer Inveran from New York via Auckland, dragged her anchors in the j stream late to-night and is now iground i off Oriental Bay. Tugs have gone to her assistance. A strong northerly gale is blowing. April 25. The cargo steamer Inveran, 4380 tons which dragged anchors and went aground near Oriental Bay in the j harbour'l.-.xt night is still aground. | The crew cf ilia boat which was' sent ashore for. assistance had a' narrow escape, the boat swamping, but fortunately it kept afloat and I drifted ashore with the men in it. The third, officer (P. Armour) who was in charge of the boat was rather severely jambed between "the boat and the Te Aro Baths against which she drifted. The steamer is under j charter to the United States by the '■ Australian Steamship Line. A strong wind is still blowing. The Inveran has 'one thousand tons of general cargo for Wellington. At half tide this morning she was - lying agaimt a rock amidships, the depth of the water on tho rock being about two to two and a half fathoms, with about four to five fathoms fore and aft. She is making no water, and an attempt will be made to float her off about three o'clock if wind abates. She is lying nearly broadside on and will have to be towed off in that position."
