LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council takes place tomorrow evening. Tenders are invited by Miss Shanahan, of Bombay, for the grazing for one year of 40 acres of first class land at Bombay. For particulars see advt, in this issue.

At last Thursday's meeting of the Franklin County Couucil a vote of sympathy was, on the motion of tha Chairman (Cr Motion) passed with the Rt. Hon W. F. Massev on the news conveyed by cable that his son Major Massey had been wounded in action.

" Manhattan Madness," the remarkable comedy-drama picturised by the Triangle Film Company and featuring Douglas Fairbanks, is to lie screened at the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, on Tuesday next. This picture is easily Doug's greatest hit. Only usual prices will be charged. A final reminder is given of the horticultural and industrial exhibition to be held under the auspices of the Women's Patriotic League on Thursday and Friday next. It is hoped that ready public support will be given to the undertaking which is the branch's latest effort on behalf of the " boys "in the trenches. Attractive stage entertainments will be presented each evening. Entries for the exhibition close tomorrow, Mrs J. M. Baxter being Hon. Sec. The show is to be opened on Thursday at 2.30 p.m. by Mrs Gunson (Mayoress of Auckland), who will also be present that evening.

Out of five candidates selected to be interviewed for the post of Organizing Secretary to the Franklin Sub-Provincial Farmers Union Mr F. S. Oldfield, of Thames, secured the preference on a vote taken at a meeting of the Executive last Friday and was accordingly appointed. Mr Oldfield, who is a married man and about 35 years of age, is well known at Waiuku, where he was engaged in farming for some time. He is regarded as an organiser of great ability and as an impressive speaker. Mr Oldfield has also farmed at Kaitaia and whilst there was instrumental in forming a drainage Board in the face of a good deal of opposition, [t may be added that whilst undergoing training at camp he met with an accident to his ankle which debarred him from further military duties. At present he 13 one of the country representatives of the Gane Milking Machine Company. He expects to take up his new duties next month.

At last Thursday's meeting of the Franklin County Council a deputation waited on the Council to ask support towards the scheme for the establishment of a Technical High School in Pukekohe. Mr F. Perkins, as Chairman of tho Pukekohe School Committee, speaking in support of the proposal, pointed out that two thirds of the children attending the prpsent Pukekohe High School belonged to the Franklin County and on that ground they asked that the Council should give all the support they could to the proposal. The Borough Council, he said, had promised to support the scheme to the extent of £SOO and the deputation suggested that a contribution of £IOOO should be made by the County Council. In this connection ho explained thut the money was required to enahlo the School Committee to negotiate for the purchase of suitable laud for the erection of the proposed school. Mr J. Patterson, another mom her of the School Committee, endorsed Mr Perkins' remarks. Mr I »ynes Fulton, as President of tho A and P Society, supported the application for assistance and expressed the opinion that more attention should be <jiven to agricultural education. For that reason ho urged that the Council should make a «rant with the object in view. VI r I). R. Hamilton, as a member of the Borough Council, askod tha* the County Council should favourably consider thu application made for liuam ial assistance towards tho erection of 1 school as proposed. Cr Thomas, who was strongly m favour of supporting the application, suggested that the deputation should also seek financial assistance from Papakura and Tuakttu Town Boards The Chairman (Or \V. C.
