PICNIC AND SPORTS MEETING A relentless, driving rain yesterday (Thursday"' marred the 50th anniversary of the settlement of Bombay, which took the form of a picnic and sports meeting, held in Mr A. French's paddock, and accordingly the attendance suffered in comparison with previous years. Of the passengers who arrived in Auckland by the sailing ship ''Bombay " just half-a-century ago, and who are now resident in Auckland, Waikato, Swanson, Rama Rama and. Bombay, tho following were present on the ground, viz. : Mr and Mrs W. K. Cornthwaite, Mr and Mrs D. B. Allison, Mrs Piggot, fenr., Mrs Griffiths, MrsC. G. Kerns, Mrs McClune, Mrs Ferguson. Mrs Martin, Mrs Powell, and Messrs J. Jessop, W. Caie, W. Piggot, J. N. Sawyer, Wootten (2), S. Hall, E Bilkey, H. Carter, Cuihbert, F. Ballard and H. J. Flay. Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P., and Mr C. K. Lawrie (Mayor of Pukekohe) were also among the visitors It was no infrequent occurrence to see group* of young people listening to the stirring tales of New Zealand's early history as told by those who had so courageously set out to conquer, some 50 jears back, obstacles which loomed up and had to be overcome in the making of j the Dominicn. Old memories were awakened anew and faces brightened up as old friends m:t and clasped each others hands in warm embraces. Opportunity was taken by Mr R. Donovan, of the children's committee, when all the old identities had gathered in the luncheon marquee, to welcome them to the sports. He hoped that they would enjoy themselves, and that it would not be the last time that they would be the guests of ths younger folk of the district. The ladies committee, consisting of the following:—Mesdames ti. Sawyer, J. Johns, E. Vine?, A. French, and the Misses A. Donovan, Flay (2), Sawyer (2), J. Cornthwaite, J. Watson, M. French, Q Kedshaw, Clements (2), E. Shanahan. S. Masefield, L. Ramsay, K Stokes, L. "McClune, Thomas (2) and Carter (2), without exception were most hospitable and carried out their arduous duties in a most pleasaant manner. The athletic sports were full of interest, and the number of competitors in each event was large; which accounted for the keen competition that resulted. As in past years there a large number of side shows and a fair amount of attention was paid them. Tbe bulk of the hard work of the day fell on the shoulders of Messrs R. Cornthwaite (secretary) and A. Best (joint secretary). Their duties were numerous and of an exacliflg nature, but nevertheless they carried them oui most efficiently. They were assisted by the following strong working committee:—Messrs H. Wilson, and G. T. Proude, judges; A. Best, starter; H. W. Landon, A. Cornthwaite and H. Carter, handicapped; A. Madill, acd H. W. Landm, marksmen; G. Carter, A. E. Harris, G. Cornthwaite and Jas. Townsend, canvassers. The result* of the sports were as follows: Local Handicap, 100 yds—A. Best, 11yds, 1 : A. E. B. single men had rather an easy win. Mrs E. H. Joyce, one of the original passengers by the " Bombay," won a set of carvers and a set of knives in morocco case (presented by Messrs Forde and Co, Auckland) in a " drawing " competition amongst 27 competitors

Mr W. Vince, Bombay's oMest settler, met with an unfortunate accident on Tuesday last, while chopping wood. A piece of the timber llew up and hit him in the eye. Dr Wake, whose services were requisitioned, ordered his removal to the Auckland Hospital, and ho left for that institution by train the following- day.
