THE FIRE BRIGADE.

No Place of Meeting. Borough Council Sympathetic.

At tlio last Borough Council meeting a letter was read from the secretary of the Fire Brigade saying it was understood that there was a hydrant, 200 ft. of hose, and three branches to come to the brigade from the Pipe Co. He asked for information as to when these would be forthcoming. At present the brigade had no place in which to meet and Mr Jones asked if the shed on the borough sectiou could be used. If it were floored it would do admirably. lie had received another account (with a footnote), and in order to " make*one job of it," submitted a list of total liabilities. Leaving oat a small amount owing by the late captain these amounts totalled £4l 15s Id. He reminded the Council that it was decided by the old Town Board to insure the men against accident. The Mayor explained what had been done for the recovery of certaiu property and money which the late captain of the brigade declined to hand

over. Mr Duan's action was confirmed. Cr. Lawrie said Mr Mason (solicitor} bad informed him that satisfactory arrangements for a settlement had been made. Tin' foreman 'Mr Clews thought it would be unwise t<> allow the shed t" be used as a moeting room. Twothirds of the floor space was occupied with tools. The Mayor said it seemed hard not to have provided a meeting place of some kind for ;t body of men who were giving their time and services to the borough. Councillors : Could we not get this place (meaning the library hall) for them The Mayor moved, That the Works Committee examine the shed, consider what was the most advisable thing to do, and report to next meeting The motion was carried, the Council being unanimous that the best possible should be done for the brigade.
