KARAKA ROAD BOARD

Monthly Meeting.

Members present at the monthly meeting on Saturday were Messrs J. Batty (chairman), G. S >vauu, R Glasson, W. Johnston. The clerk reported a credit balance of £377. Karaka Land Company Road. The chairman stated that the Karaka Land company had not gone any further in the matter of filling in the gully (sanctioned at the last meeting of the Board) than in buying the pipes. lie offered on behalf of the Company, if the Board wished, to allow them to take the old road back. The new road had been accepted but not gazetted. Mr Swann : Why not lot the company inako an offer to form and make the road. The chairman contended that it was neither the place nor tho duty of the company to do so. Mr Swan 11. lam only making tho suggestion. The chairman explained that he had only fonnd out recently that the old road was laid out as far as Moss'. As chairman of tho Board ho was opposed to forming tho old road because the new road was tho best and cheapest.

Mr Johnston pointed out that tho people buying the land abutting the new road bought the land with their eyes open. Other roads required attention first. - After a desultory conversation, during which Mr Swann suggested that the question be deferred till next meeting, the matter dropped. Kiriovood's Road. The chairman reported that Kirkwood's road was alreidy a Government road. Brown and Elliott had spokeu to him ou the necessity of attention. The chairman and Mr Glasson were authorised to inspect the road and report at next meeting.

Clerk and Foreman of Works. Mr Johnston moved that the Board invite applications for a combiued cloik and foreman of works, lie considered there would be no dillioulty in getting a man. As so m as the loan works got in hand the new man would have plenty to do overseeing the works. The chairman read duties drawn up by Mr Johnston and himself. Tho salary fixed was £llO, and a horse allowance of £25. The chairman strongly opposed the motion, contending that the Board required a good surfaceman.

Mr Swann : I don't cure a hang about tho clerk, I want a man to work on the roads. Mr Glasson thought the combination of duties would not prove workable. Mr Swann seconded the resolution, which was lost on the casting vote of the chairman. Finger-Posts. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to erect finger-posts, oach member of the Board to procure and erect what posts he considered necessary.

Rates. G:> tho motion of Mr Johnston, seconded by Mr Glasson, it \?as decided to strike a general rate of Jd" and a special rate of 9-lGd. Koad Board Map. Mr Swann reported that ho was procuring an estimate for a map. The chairman asked for au expression of opinion from members as to what amount they would pay, the view being expressed that not more than £lO should be expended.

General, in roply to a letter from the Drury Road Board it was decided that Mr Swann arrange with tho Board regarding a surface drain along Mr Cossey's property, and that the Board preferred that the metalling of the South road be left over for the County Council to do. Mr T. P. Gloyn askod that the Board open the road at the south end of Sec. 120.—Tho clerk was instructed to see Mr Moss and tho writer and to arrange for»tho erection of a gate by the former. The chairman reported that it had been suggested that the Board should call a meeting of those interested in the erection of tho Papakura-Karaka bridge.—lt was decided that a meeting be held iu the Karaka school on October sth. It was decided that in future all applications for transfers, signed by the seller and purchaser, must couie before tho Board. It was decided to impose the 10 per cent penalty on all overdue rates. Mr R. H. Forbes complained that Lis name had not been placed on tho roll. Tho clerk explained the roason. —Decided to tusk Mr Forbes to make formal application. Transfer on the roll from Cln-al to G. Swann was agreed to. Accounts amounting to £l3O were passed for payment.
