PUTARURU BOROUGH COUNCIL

DECEMBER MEETING The December meeting: of the P«taruru Borough Council was held on Tuesday when those present were the Mayor, Mr H. L. Martin, Crs. C. V. Beared, C. R. Robirfson, D. C. Freeman, J. H. Morris, T. L. Pearce and C. E. (Mrs) Tulloch, and the clerk, Mr V. L. Drummond. Apologies were received from Crs. J. A. Halkett and R. J. Gairdner. E.P.S. Supplies An enquiry was received from the Putaruru District Ambulance Society regarding the possibility of its purchasing E.P.S. supplies belonging to the borough. Mr Drummond explained that the supplies procured during the war years had been stored on his premises for some years. It was decided to present the supplies requested to the society. Shrubs on Frontage Permission was sought by Mr C. R. McKenzie to plant shrubs on the lawn frontage of his property. Permission was granted subject to his conferring with Cr. Morris regarding the type of shrubs to be planted as it was considered there were too many trees in Putaruru which would eventually have to be removed. Boy Scouts’ Rebate Mr J. B. Rolfe, secretary of the Putaruru Boy Scouts’ Association, wrote asking if the council could continue its past procedure of rebating the rates on the association’s p roperty. It was decided to continue the gesture. Croquet Club Accepts Acceptance of the lease of the reserve behind the tennis courts in Arapuni Road at a peppercorn rental was the subject of a letter received from the Putaruru Croquet Club. Removal of Trees A letter was received from Mr J. M. Spear, Auckland, requesting permission for the removal of two trees on the main highway which mask the approach to Mr Spear’s garage. He stated that he did not like to ask for the destruction of the trees, but he was paying a fair sum in rates for his frontage and the trees were a source of, danger. Councillors agreed that the trees were a menace as it was not possible to see down Tirau Road when emerging frpm the garage, and referred the, matter to the works committee with power to act. Alteration to Railway Suggestions that the council’s engineer confer with the engineers of both the New Zealand Railways and the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce regarding the alterations to the railway line to Putaruru were received from the chamber. Mr Martin said that the Railways Department would consider no deviation, intending only to ease the grade. The council was concerned because of possible interference with roading plans at present being drawn up for the borough by Mr Worley, the council’s consulting engineer. The clerk was instructed to advise Mr Worley of the suggestions. Foreman’s Report

Mr D. Burke, in his report, as foreman, stated that general maintenance of streets 'was continuedthroughout the month, and that the news extensions to the Neal Street water supply were attended to. The new mower recently purchased was used successfully in Glenshea Park, which it was now hoped would, be kept in excellent order. Neal Street Reticulation Mr J. I. Hay reported that the reticulation of Neal Street had been completed. Traffic Inspector’s Report Another detailed report was received from Traffic Inspector J. L. Gray. During the month six persons were tested for licenses, four passing. Thirteen drivers were warned about minor borderline offences and 13 motorists were warned regarding their manner of parking in Princes Street. Several cyclists were cautioned for riding on footpaths. Alterations to Theatre A report was received from the picture committee stating a sketch plan of alterations for the Civic Theatre was submitted to it by Mr A. Fountain. It was proposed to extend the theatre back into the supper room providing further seating accommodation for 80 or 90. New seats required, including replacements, numbered 202. # The sketch plan was approved, and it was left to Mr Fountain to complete when it would be referred to the council. Mr Fountain was also to investigate the matter of additional heating for both the new library and council room at present in course of erection. Street Lights The clerk reported that he approached the Thames Valley Electric Power Board regarding the recent irregularity in the lighting of some streets in the borough. He

was told that the board was conducting experiments but stated the lights had since been adjusted. Municipal Conference Both the Mayor and Or. C. V. Pearce were appointed council representatives for the annual municipal conference to be held in Auckland from March 7 to 10, 1950. Building Permits A small list of building permits to the value of £295 was approved. The clerk reported that the total value of permits issued between April 1 and November 30, 1949, was £45,240. Season’s Greetings At the conclusion of the meeting Mr Martin wished the councillors and clerk compliments of the season, saying that it had been a happy working year for the council, a state of affairs which he hoped would continue during his term. Members of the council reciprocated, the meeting concluding on an informal note.
