PUTARURU MOCK HUNT

PONY CLUBS COMBINE In perfect weather the Putaruru Pony Club’s first combined hunt was held on the properties of Messrs O. Dennison and F. Tipler. After a good breakfast in Mr Dennison’s paddock, on Overdale Road, all assembled and were addressed by the district commissioner, Mr E. Ward, who introduced Mr L. P. Swarbrick, Waikato representative of the New Zealand Pony Clubs’ Association. The hounds were then called together and marked with red sashes. They were led by Miss B. Baldwin, who was ably assisted by Mr A. Higgins as whip. The hounds led the large field of about 80 riders over Mr Dennison’s farm, across the road into Mr Tipler’s. Although the trail was lost occasionally a fast run brought them to the far end of Mr Tipler’s property. After a spell a fresh pack of hounds was chosen and the homeward run commenced. A few spills occurred as is inevitable at a large hunt, adding to the thrills of the sport.
