COUNTY ROADS

WORK DONE LAST MONTH Visit By Commission and Chief Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald reported as follows on county road work to the Matamata County Council:— Materials 1 used on roads last last month included 429 cubic yards of gravel on Orepunga Roadi improvements; ISO of sand on approaches to the new bridge over Man gap ap a stream, 447 main highway; one of irffetal on 312 highway; 668 of sand used in improving haunches to 809 highway from Waharoa to. the Pairei'e turnoff near Hinuera; 34 of sand on shoulders .t. Matamata-Pairere; 39 of metal to the northern end of Maisey Road where the original eanded length is being strengthened; 36 of sand to Pohlen; nine of sand to Old Te Aroha; 15 of metal to Mangawhero North; 111 of metal to Davidson’s; nine of metal to Te Poi-Okoroira; 45 of gravel on Rangitanuku; six of gravel on Te Whetu; 2-11 of gravel cn Lichfield-Ngatira; 24 of sand on French Pass and 42 of gravel on Plantation; a grand total of 1850 cubic yards.

Test piles for Ora'ka bridge at Okoroire have been driven but casting of the .remainder has- been hell ulp for the want of No. 6 wire. The acute shortage of reinforcing materials seems 1 likely to seriously delayy progress o'a all "new bridges. A special report .on Buck land Road is submitted separately. Arrangements have been made for starting up the Paraonui crushing plant shortly.

P.W.D. Chief Engineer .Mr. Newsham, engineer-in-chief, Public Works Department, visited the county last week and made an inspection of roads giving access to exotic forests at Tokoroa. The newly-constituted Local Body Commission will pay an informal visit to the county . in.' connection with Karapiro Lake during this 1 week. It is noticed that scrub fires which have recently occurred along the southern frings l of Tapui mountain forest have made in-roads into the live bush, and it would appear that someone or seme persons have been guilty of a callous disregard of the common decencies and the general welfare.
