SPANISH MONARCHY
SHOULD NOT BE RESTORED Polish Opinion. “General Franco must not be allowed to save his precarious position by restoring the monarchy in Spain ” says the influential Polish daily, Dziennik Ludowy. “The last five centuries of monarchy in Spain were a curse to the brave Spanish people. The whole history of the Spanish monarchy is one of 'corrupt courts and bribed governments. The monarchy lost Spain her position in the world and brought the workers and peasants to abject poverty. “ After the proclamation of the Third Republic the reactionaries, including royalists, negotiated with Hitler and Mussolini and brought about armed intervention. In this uneven struggle the Republicans lost, and the Spanish people live in oppression—to the shame of Europe. Restoration of the monarchy would mean perpetuation of the fascist terror under another shield —it would be given the appearance of legitimacy and the endorsement of a ‘ plebiscite.’ The Spanish people are protesting by intensification Of underground activities. Soon , there may be active resistance all over Spain. A People’s Poland watch- - es witli the deepest sympathy the struggle for the Spanish Republic, for whieh so many @f the best sons of Spain and Poland gave their lives.”
