UNSIGHTLY HOARDINGS

FARMERS PROTEST Local Bodies Have Power To Order Removal Unsightly signs and advertising hoardings are reappearing in the countryside, according- to a protest sent by Federated Farmers to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry. Mr. Par-y and the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, have replied to the Federation. Mr.. Semple stated that, in his opinion, it appeared that there had been no appreciable increase in recent years in the number of signs under the control of the Railways Department. The department contended that its advertising . activities' wore conducted in a manner which left no reasonable grounds for objection, and such advertising rendered a

service to the manufacturing and commercial community generally. In his reply, Mr. Parry expressed appreciation for the concern of the Federation about such adveritisilngi, but pointed ut that there was considerable difference of opinion on the subject. To meet the conflict of interest between beautifying societies and the business section of the community, the 'Government had conferred on certain local authorities powers to make by-laws regulating hoardings and advertising displays. “I would therefore suggest” said Mr. Parry, “that if the members of your Federation have taken exception to any specific instances of objectionable advertising displays, trat such instances be taken up with the local authorities concerned with a view to ascertaining whetherremedial action should he taken.”
