PUTARURU TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING There was a full attendance of members at the May meeting of the Putaruru Town Boa’rd, Mr. A. C. Anderson presiding, assisted by the town clerk, Mr. V. (L. Drummond. Prospective Builders The clerk reported that there had been only two replies to the board’s advertisement asking any person, or .firm, interested in obtaining permits for the building of essential business premises to contact the town •clerk. Borough Council The suggestion that the Putaruru town district become a borough on July 1 was approved. Mr. V. L. Drummond’s appointment as returning officer for the borough council' election was also approved. After some little discussion it was decided that the borough council consist of eight councillors and a mayor. > The dark suggested that the election for the council be held on July 16, and the first meeting of the new council on the following Tuesday, July 22. This suggestion was approved. The dates suggested, however, are all subject to the approval of the Internal Affairs Department, and a Gazette notice must be issued to finalise them. Hospital Levy The board was: advised that there was a decrease of approximately £IOO in its hospital levy for this year. A request from the Waikato Hospital Board that the levy be paid monthly in order to save interest on overdraft was discussed, but om the motion of Mr. Fitzherbert, seconded by Mr. Morris, it was decided to continue paying the levy as in the past—quarterly. Mowing of Reserve .'*#■ Mr. O. S. Burt, of the Putaruru Hotel, advised that owing to lack of labour he was unable to continue keeping the grass cut on the reserve opposite the hotel. It was decided to write and thank Mr. Burt for his past services in . this matter. Mr. D. C. Freeman remarked that in the very near future there was going to be a very large area of grass to be cut in and around the town. Mr. Anderson commented that it would be a job which could be handled by a caretaker for the park, when such a position is available. Meantime the board was also having difficulty in getting labour for essential work on roads and streets.

Sewerage Loan Advice was received from the Loans Board that a loan, as proposed, could not be sanctioned for the No. 1 sewerage scheme in Putaruru until a number of alterations, mainly in connection with the type of tanks and' disposal of effluent, had been made to the scheme. A letter on the subject was also received from Mr. R. Worley, the board’s engineer, commenting on the Loans Board letter. He advised that the Loans Board present requirements would add between £2OOO and £3OOO to the cost of the No. 1 sewerage scheme. He suggested certain alterations, and it was decided to reply to the Loans Board accordingly. Municipal Band A letter of thanks for the support given it by the board over the last year was received from the Putaruru Municipal Band, which also forwarded a cheque for £l5O, this amount to be credited against the loan of £SOO from the boaTd. Members expressed their appreciation. Annual Accounts The annual accounts were also -discussed, arid a full report on them •will be published next week. j Subdivisions Subdivisions affecting properties of Mr. J. M. Spear and the Distributors Hardware Co., Ltd., were approved. A tentative subdivision of a block for the Housing Department was received, but as one or two of the sections did not comply with the bylaws, their frontages being less than 55 feet, the department’s attention is to he drawn to the matter, and the plan was not approved meantime.

Building Permits Building permits were approved for F. C. C. Pratt far a dwelling, and for a garage and workshop; A. C. Anderson; for a dwelling for R. S. Tait; Litch/ward and Co. for a dwelling far G. V. Baraks; A. L. Aikman for an extension to his garage; L. J. Randle for the erection of a bach; N. R. Hunt for an additional room to a dwelling for D. McKenzie; and for R. 'G. Barton, E. Ward and H. Truss for the removal and re-erection of a shed each. Reservoir Road The newly-formed l road behind Glenshea Park is to Joe called Reservoir Read. This was agreed to on the motion of Messrs. Anderson and Lee. Lorries Using School Track Members expressed their displeasure at the use by lorries of the school track recently formed for the safety of the children attending the new school. Posts that had been placed at the top of the track to prevent lorries using it have simply been knocked down. Notices are to be placed at both entrances warning that the track is for use by pedestrians and school children only. Revaluation The clerk was l asked' to follow up previous correspondence with the Valuation Department, and to ask again if they could give any indication now as to when the revision of property valuations in Putaruru can be made. Cows StrUyinrg Comment was made by members about residents allowing cows to stray around the town, and the clerk was asked to write to several residents named pointing out that this was an infringement-of the bylaws, and that the cows often caused considerable inconvenience and sometimes damage to the property of others.
