TOMA PROGRESS LEAGUE

- ANNUAL MEETING. Town Plan On View At the annual meeting of the Tokoroa Progress League tho following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr. E. Nuttall; secretary, Mr. E. W. Newbold; assistant secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. Dyer; committee, Messrs. Pratt, Cameron, Dunham, Tye, Kruse, Noble, McQuilkan, Newell, Kirkman, Molesworth, Waldon. Business of general nature was dealt with, including matters of a doctor, art service, railway freights, extended bus services, of having the key road in the town plan surveyed; also a pound in Tokoroa. Chairman’s Report The chairman, Mr. Nuttall, in presenting his report for the year, cited the various activities of the league, which concerned itself with bettor postal and telephone facilities, better equipment for deep well pumps, improved bus service, the matter of a doctor’s services, public conveniences, and town planning, which the league had promoted for years, and which was the result of the vision of some of its members. A large number of members were present, also several interested visitors, including Mr. E. D. White, chairman of the Matamata County Council, Mr. J. A. Beck, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald and Mr. ’G. Bnsor, clerk, engineer and assistant engineer, respectively. Representing New Zealand Forest Products were Messrs. M. St. J. Paxton, Buckett, Morehouse, Cameron and King. The last four expressed a desire ,te become members of the league. They were given a cordial welcome. In dealing with the town plan, which looked very ' imposing in colour, also two plans of the proposed civic centre, Mr. Fitzgerald was accorded: a very attentive hearing, some members listening with almost bated breath when he said the town was expected to have a population of between three and eight thousand. The matter of co-operation was sought by the council and' various landowners present gave assurance that they were prepared to co-oper-ate in the matter of maxing land available.

Speaking for New Zealand 'Forest Products, Mr. Paxton said he was unable to commit the forestry company, but he could assure, all present that it f would' plan and cooperate to have the town develop! in the best possible way. Mr. Buckett said! tho company would give every considered assistance it could.

Mr. E. D. White, in dealing with, the whole proposal, said the council, after very careful and deliberate consideration, came into the master as a result of persistent local demand.

Mr. Dunham pointed out that when the population grew to a certain number in a given area, a town board would relieve the council of the responsibilities. Mr. Kruse moved a vote of thanks to the council for its support and presence at-the meeting. Mr. Dunham, as local councillor, moved a vote of thanks to the Progress League for its unflagging energy in keeping the matter ever before the council. The chairman, in thanking the council, pointed out that the declaration which had been signed by the Governor-General in respect of Tor koroa was without doubt the greatest single event in the history of the district.
