RACING NOTES

EARLY SUCCESS Sid Tapp’s First Winner Sir Fox Wins Well A couple of decades ago the name of Tapp was well known in Dominion racing circles, principally through Roy as a rider, George as a trainer, and Steve as a successful owner. On Saturday last at Ellerslie the name again shone prominently when Sir Fox was firrjt home in the Rledisloe Hurdles Handicap, the winner being trained by C. S. (Sid) Tapp, of Matamata. Although he has had almost a life-long experience with racehorses Sid only obtained his trainer’s brief six weeks ago, so that his success has been somewhat meteoric. Without an accident he may have made it two as the only other horse he has been training at present, Desert Patrol, was in the leading position when he clipped and fell in the Waitemata Handicap. Sid Tapp was originally apprenticed to his Uncle 'George at Frankton but World War I. interfered with his ambitions as a jockey. After years when he went to Matamata to become associated with Allan McArthur with whom he served about five years. He then had a brief period with Bob Mateer, his particular charge being Sir Fox, which he welcomed home a winner in his, first hurdle race at Rotorua Hunt meeting in June. Actually the book said owner-trainer. Tapp’s other charge, Decert Patrol, is a horse that would take the eye from amongst others. He, is a three-year colt by the Austral-ian-bored Contact from Better England, a mare by Little England out of Mem Sahib, by Quin Abbey Iridescence.
