RAGING

NOTES AND COMMENTS Morrinsville’s Turn. Although owning a winner is no new expeiience to Mr. A. N. Gibbons, whose Lady Reynard won the first division of the Trial Stakes on Saturday, Mr. W. S. Goosman, M.P., scored his first success with Laughing Fox in the second division and followed up with a win by Glen Connell in the Waimai Hurdles. Laughing Fox was at good odds- He had previously passed the post first at Rotorua last season but lost the race, being placed second. Mr. Goosman completed the hattrick on Monday when ihis most recent purchase, Town Survey, won the valuable hack cup of £350 to the winner. Mr. Goosman secured the honour of heading, the winning owners’ list with a total of £714 13s 6d, made up with: Laughing Fox, £154 13s 6d; Glen Connell, £210; Town Survey, £350. A Waikato Day. A feature of Monday’s racing at Te Rapa was the success of Waikato stables. Five of the eight winners were trained in Waikato, two at Takanini and one at Gisborne. Respected Jockey. There will be general regret .. throughout New Zealand, and in the Auckland Province in particular, at the tragic death of Rod McTavish ■ which occurred in an accident in the running of the Frankton Handicap, the first race on Monday’s programme at Te Rapa. “Rod,’’ who served his apprenticeship with Mr. “Dick” Hannpn at Cambridge, could be said to have been a model in his profession. Although unassuming and to an extent even shy it may have been these attributes which made him popular. Luck Was Out. Luck was against Mr. T. H. Lowry and his trainer, Lance Stowe, on the third day at the Riccarton meeting when Vin d’Honneur and Lambourn were both placed second in their respective races, the New Zealand Oaks Stakes and the Canterbury Cup. It is evident from accounts of the races that with a little more fortune both might just as easily have won. Vin d’Honneur lost lengths at the beginning ofi her race

and though Salutation won in grand style the Hastings-trained Tiderace filly might just as easily have turned the tables. In the Canterbury Cup, Lambourn did not get the best of runs and was practically last three furlongs from home, but once he got clear he finished on like a train to be beaten by only half-a-head in one of the most exciting finishes in the Cup’s history. A little more racing before the trip was undertaken might have made a difference. A Good Sort. Purchased at the National Sales for 230 guineas, the Theio-bred Salutation is building up a fine record of classic successes and has already proved herself a cheap proposition- With successes in the Dunedin Guineas, the Wellington Guineas and in the New Zealand Oaks Stakes she is proving a great representative of Theio. Salutation’s stake winnings, including seconds in other than classics, now amount to £1255. She is the first grey to win the Oaks. Class is in her breeding as She comes from the same family a Te Kara (Auckland Cup), Limarch (A.J-C St. Leger) and Queen City (AR.C. Welcome Stakes). Her record should be carried much further, as she has plenty of size to assist her. Cross Question’s Breeding. x Cross Question, who finished third in the Spring Nursery Handicap at Riccarton, is by Solicitor-General from Eulalie, and is owned by her breeder, Mr. G- R. Macdonald, for whom she is trained by C B. Dawson. She had shown promise on the track, but as she was appearing for the first time she did better than was expected of her by her -connections- Another attractive youngster for whom good things are -promised in the south is Straight Bat, one of the Chokebore team, who is a chestnut filly by Cricket Bat from Winsome Hind. Hot Stuff! Curry, winner of the maiden race at Napier Park, was having only her second start, her first-outing having been at Hastings a month ago when she was chopped back at the start and finished "out of a place. She is a well-developed three-year-old with a bold action. Curry’s dam, Caen, was a sprinter of some ability. She is by Bulandshar. Morrinsville FoalingsNotable foalings at Mr. J. H, Gaddes’ i Morrinsville stud during the past few days are a colt by Autopay—Gortyn and a colt by Baffles —-Sandrift. Gortyn’s latest contribution to the Stud Book is a half-brother to Gar Vaals, Selwyn and Sabatini. The colt by Baffles —■ Sandrift is a youngster of good size.

Salutation’s Sire. Salutation, which won the New Zealand Oaks on Wednesday, is by the same sire, Thieo, as Mr. Frank Rose’s' Mihinui. English-bred Winner. A Hawke’s Bay visitor in Celebrity accounted for the big field in the Strowan Plate at Christchurch on Monday. Celebrity began smartly and was clear entering the straight from Fur Coat, Dusk, Miss Saone and Hinepo. Celebrity went on for an .easy win. The winner is a half-sister to Gay Shield, Dink, Beau Pere, and Mr. Standfast, and was imported from England by her present owner. Faultless Jumping. The older full-brother to Kindergarten, Native Chief, made a great impression by his faultless jumping when he cleared away from the field to win the Gteenmeadows Hack Hurdle Race- He was 15 lengths clear of the field at the finish and looked as though he could have gone round again. It was only his second start over hurdles, he having won at the first up at Gisborne recently, and on his performance there seems little doubt that he will go on to better things in this department. Coming to Hand. The Greenmeadows-trained Yogi, who had to be let up for some months, has not had much racing since he resumed, but with each outing he appears to be coming to hand better. At his 'best Yogi represents class and in B. H. Morris’ hands he should not be long now in returning to the winning list. There were many sportsmen who considered that he held excellent prospects in his races at Riccarton, after the promising fourth he ran in the Canterbury Cup, in which the first four horses passed the judge almost in line.
