AIRMAN HONOURED .'Leading Aircraftsman C. Wood Approximately 100 people attended the Lichfield Hall on Wednesday to honour Leading-Aircraftsman Colin Wood, of the RN.Z.A.F. The evening’s entertainment took the form of a dance, for which music was sipplied by a Putaruru orchestra, assisted by Messrs. J- Hamilton and C. W. Blennerhassett. Extras were played by Miss S. Kinloch and Mr. B- Sayers- The hall was decorated with greenery and spring flowers for the occasion, the floor was. in splendid order, and the supper dainty and ample. Interspersed wit h dances were songs by Mrs. A. Vincent and Miss A. Anderson. An unusual feature of the programme was the singing of three songs by the guest of the evening, it being - explained that a considerable time might elapse before residents would again have the opportunity of hearing him sing- Leading-Aircraftsman Wood, who has broadcast frequently frojn IYA, when asked to sing, said he would be pleased to do so, and his fine baritone voice was heard to advantage in “Mother Machree,’’ “I Shot an Arrow” and “Bachelors of Devon,” and he received tumultuous applause. During the supper interval Mr. K. S. Cox, on behalf of Lichfield friends, made Colin a presentation, and Mr. P. D. Morrison, representing the Putaruru District Soldiers’ Social Committee, made the customary gift of a cheque, and wished Colin the best of luck, happy landings, and a safe and speedy return to his loved ones. The guest, in a neat speech, thanked all those present for their kindness in giving him such a wonderful evening and for their generous gifts- “For He’s A Jolly Good •* Fellow” was sung with a will. Dancing cchtinued till 12 30 and the evening’s entertainment was brought to a close with the singing of “Aiuld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. Messrs. R. Baldwin and C.“W Blennerhassett were the M-’sC.
