NOTES AND COMMENTS Bred at MorrinsvilleDependable, bred by Mr. D. Hickey, at Morrinsville, must have shown somebody something of late. Although he had nine starts last ■year for a second and two fourths, and had previously had an unplaced performance this season, the brown colt by Jay—Swiftest, was sent out second win favourite in the Nihotupu mile at Ellerslie on Saturday. Hitherto doubtful even j ,» x ,,..WOL r Jta, six furlongs he finished like an 1 aeroplane to get second to Flying Vixen. The latter was ridden by ! the Morrinsville lad, W. O. • Eneorj Also From Morrinsville. ;,v i Another Morrinsvillo-bread one in j Lady Reynard got into the minor J money on Saturday, earning £2O for ! Mr- Angus Gibbons. Not much —£20 | —but a promise of more to come. Lady Reynard may take time, like ; others by Foxbridge, but she is bred, for speed. Her dam, Lady * Ridicule, was very fast once she foeJ,came solid. ! RepresentativeI Although Mr. W. S- Goosman, ) M-P-, has yet to crack it for a win, jhe went close on Monday, when his two-year-old by Nightmarch — Praise ran second to Indian Princess in the Hopeful Stakes. It would seem that in Laughing Fox and Representative Mr. Goosman will have two fair horses at least to represent him this season.

First Appearance. f nr Irish Treasure, who showed up t( prominently in the maiden event at < Motukarara, is owned by her breed- , ers, the Hon. G. R. Hunter and the Hon. P. C- Webb, for whom she is g being trained by A- S. Ellis. Iri sh r Treasure is a three-year-old by j Irish Lancer from Gold Pit, dam of Toro Koura, who raced successfully j in the same colours. This was the filly’s first race, and her effort was i very encouraging- j Aintree Again, Aimtree, owned by -the secretary of the Matamata Racing Club, Mr. B- C- Taylor, was the best hurdler at the Avondale meeting, being narrowly defeated by Bisquit for a win on the first day and winning fairly comfortably on Monday. Aintree’s earnings were £250, bringing his trainer, J. W. Cathro, further up the winning trainers’ list- Cathro ' has been very painstaking with j 5 Aintree and deseres his success. j Greek Queen Ungenerous. 1 Greek Queen was in one of her ungenerous moods on Monday. j After they had gone a furlong she was near the tail of the field and although she made up ground in the straight the slow beginning spoilt a winning chance. Paper Money MaresFrancolin, dam of Winning Flight, winner of the McLean Stakes for two-year-olds at Dunedin, has had an outstanding record as a producer of winners, and provides another illustration of the success at the stud of Paper Money mares. Her first production, Night Wings won several good races, a 1933 colt by Lord Warden died, and she missed the following year- Then Ortyx arrived, and fhis speedy galloper ran aiway with the John Grigg Stakes in 47 l-ssec, time that was not beaten in the short history of that classicThen Dark Flight, foaled in 1936, came into prominence by equalling Silver Scorn’s Riccarton record for six furlings of lmin 9 2-ssec. Gold Flight was the next representative, and she holds the Wingatui record for five furlongs of lmin 1 l-ssec, with 9.3 on her back. All these record-breakers were bred by Mr. D. M. Tweedie, of Riverton, wiho is now training his own horses- In his opinion, expressed as

far back as the Grand National meeting, Winning Flight will prove to be the best of Francolin’s familyShe is engaged in both the Wellesley and Welcome Stakes at Trentham.

All four places in the McLean Stakes were gained by fillies. Carolyn runner-up to Winning Flight, is by Paper Money from Queen Astrid, who is not in the Stud Book. Carolyn ■is trained at Invercargill by F. W. pllis, and possesses a marked turn of speed. Grilse, the third place-getter, is by Solicitor-General from the English mare First Cost, by Salmon Trout, and is owned by her breeder, Mr. E- Steele, of Windsor Park stud, Oamaru- Her stablemate, Trapeze, by Ringmaster, who filled fourth place, is also from an English mare, Merry Miss, by Son-in-law.
