LOCAL AND GENERAL

The Rev. P. Cleary, vicar of Putaruru, left on Monday for Hamilton to attend the annual synod of the Waikato diocese in St. Peter’s Cathedral. Complaints are being made by motorists about the menace constituted by cyclists, particularly boys, who ride their cycles with their hands off the handlebars. A serious accident was nearly caused through this habit recently on the Tirau road, while other drivers say they often have to keep well over on the sides of roads to allow ample room for cyclists In case they lose control.

A striking change is noticeable in the rougher pastures in the district as a result of the recent warm and wet weather. Areas on which the grass, had been retarded and discoloured by the earlier long spell of frosts are showing exceptional growth and excellent colour. The business before the annual general meeting of the Putaruru Calf Club, which was called for Wednesday, June 24, was deferred, it being thought the meeting was not representative enough to continue. | ■Another general meeting was held last ■ evening. A full report will appear in next week’s Press. An unexpected truce in the house competition being conducted by the Arapuni Parents’ Association was brought about during the week-end. For the past few weeks red, white and blue flags have been flown from the school, indicating the relative position of each house in the competition. The gusty weather on Sunday blew the three flags away. In the Putaruru district the June rainfall was 4.07 in, distributed over 10 days, compared with B.6in in June of last year. For the first six months of this year the rainfall was 31.55 in, compared with 31.22 in for the corresponding period of last year, and 51.19 in for the whole of 1935. Frosts were recorded on 19 mornings in June last. The merits of the products ol the Putaruru Press are its best salesmen.
