OFF FOR HOLIDAYS
GOING-AWAY REMINDERS No matter how careful you may be, there are always things that may go wrong when the household migrates for the holidays. It is a good idea to write three lists before you leave, one of oddments to take with you, another of those that must be left behind, and a third of all the things to be done to ensure a pleasant return. Here they are: — What to take: Aspirin, iodine, cotton wool, cold cream, boracic lint and ointment, darning outfit, cold cure, woollen vests, white shoe cleaner. To leave ready at home: Tinned soups, tongue, fruit, milk, coffee, tea, sugar, matches (in tins), crispbread in tins.
Before departure: Turn off water, gas, and electric light; notify milkman of date of return; send cat and dog to friends; empty all flower vases, water jugs, milk jugs, wine decanters; put away, or give away, all bread, cake, biscuits, fruit, cooked food; put away (in tins) all papers, magazines, and matches, and turn up the ends of long, heavy curtains (in case of mice); send jewellery and silver to the bank for safety. Put the last list on your table and tick off the duties as they are done. A good way of remembering where you have put the various keys that are so necessary on your return is to jot down a reminder which you can leave on the hall table or somewhere easily seen on your return.
