MATAMATA VICTORIES Two Cups Retained Cambridge Polo Club challenged Matamata on Saturday for the Abbott (senior) and Ladies’ (junior) cups, but failed in each challenge. The matches were played on the racecourse before a good crowd of spectators and Mr. C. Potts refereed both games. 1 In the junior game for the Ladies’ Cup Matamata, with a handicap of two goals over Cambridge, outclassed the visitors and had much the best of the game. In the first chukka F. Klaus scored for Matalata and Porritt notched two goals for Cambridge. In the second chukka, Thirlwall and Elliott each scored for Matamata. There was no score in the third chukka, but in the fourth Porritt added Cambridge’s third goal. Klaus scored in the fifth and sixth chukkas, Elliott also getting two in the latter; R. Hannan notching one for the visitors. In the final chukka there was no score.
In the senior game for the Abbott Cup, Matamata were a trifle lucky to win, their handicap of three goals giving them victory. The game was very fast, and A. McNicol opened for Matamata. R. Speake replied for Cambridge in the ‘ second and C. Morgan (Matamata) and Fisher (Cambridge) each got a goal in the third. In the fourth chukka K. Peake notched two goals for the visitors, and, G. Vosper added another in the fifth spell. Matamata rallied in the sixth and Earl Johnston and C. Morgan both scored. In the final chulcka the game was very fast, and’' a goal by F. Klaus was replied to by goals by Fisher and Vosper for Cambridge, leaving Matamata 5—7, but one goal up with their handicap.
