Women’s Institute.

WAITOA BRANCH. The May meeting of the Waitoa branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Y.M.C.A. Mrs. Fleming (president) presided. An amendment for the Waikato Federation bi-annual meeting regarding a “ Use More Butter Campaign ” was read, discussed and unanimously passed. Mrs. Fleming was appointed as delegate to this meeting. Several competitions in connection with this campaign were arranged. The following items were contributed : Pianoforte duet, Mesdames Forster and McLaren; solo, Mrs. Blackwell; recitation, Mrs. Lewis, of Te Aroha. A short talk, “ Care of the Figure,” was given by Mrs. Lewis, of Te Aroha.

A competition, “ The best article made from a 501 b flour bag,” was very popular. Some beautiful work was shown, it being really wonderful what can be done with the humble flour bag-. Points in order of merit were awarded for this. Another successful competition was for the best scones made with butter. Points in order of merit and a prize donated by the judges were given. This competition was won by Mrs. Burgess. A threepenny bring-and-buy surprise packet was another success, it being surprising what could be got for three pence. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Shandley, Joll, Garner, Blackwell, Holland and A. R. Johnson.

WHITIICAHU BRANCH. At the May meeting of the Whitikahu branch of the Women’s Institute (ten miles from Morrinsville) the roll call was “ Limericks,” which caused much amusement. An interesting demonstration of skin curing was given by Mrs. Sainsbury, of the Gordonton Institute. The competition for the meeting was for the four best chrysanthemums, the winner being Mrs. P. H. Clark. Afternoon tea brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. The hostesses were Mesdames Seifert, Webley, Wolveren and Miss A. Law. MORRINSVILLE BRANCH. In the absence of Mrs. Pole, Mrs. Starnes opened the May meeting of the Morrinsville branch of the Women’s Institute. All stood to repeat the creed. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames P. J. Cooper, Echlin, Petry, Pole, and Miss Rutland. Mesdames Jackson and King and Misses D. Wright and Frith were elected as members. The May motto is “ Unity is Strength.” The roll call, “ A Knitted Square,” resulted in a number of squares being handed in. These are to be joined together to make a quilt to be given to the Mayor’s relief depot. Arrangements are in hand for a concert to be held early in June to raise funds to pay for sending a delegate to the conference at Christchurch. A demonstration of making cane trays, given by Miss I. Pryor, one of the youngest members of the branch, was greatly appreciated. Supper was served by Mesdames Dickinson, Holcroft and Welch and Misses L. Clark and B. Wright.

WALTON BRANCH. j At the May meeting of the Walton Institute Mrs. Rix presided over a ! good attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet was read and adopted, and nominations of officers were received. The president gave a splendid address on the year’s work. The question of forming a dramatic society among the members of the Institute was discussed and met with favourable support, a committee being elected to carry the work through. A presentation of a silver spoon, suitably inscribed, was made to Baby Mapp, first Institute baby, the mother, Mrs. Dun Mapp, acknowledging the gift. Remits for the Dominion conference were discussed. The members are busy preparing articles for the Waikato Winter Show. A vote of confidence was cor. ‘ "mod by the members to their delegate (Mrs. Rix, president) to--t-he"fortheoming Dominion conference.
