PUTARURU ROAD WORKS.

ECONOMICAL TARSEALING Gift of Gravel Pit. Past and future road works were discussed at the Putaruru Town Board meeting last week. Reference was made by the chairman (Mr. W. Yandle) and members to the very generous gift made by Mr. C. G. Alcorn, on Mrs. Alcorn’s behalf, of a gravel pit situated on the latter’s property at Putaruru. The quarry was a valuable one, and the benefit conferred on the public of Putaruru was inestimable, and would lead to an extensive reduction in the cost of roading materials used by the board. The chairman and members expressed their appreciation and gratitude.

Continuing on the matter of roading, it was stated the question of supplying metal for Pah road had now been simplified as only cartage would now have to be provided for. It was decided to approach the Matamata County Council on the question of cartage.

The supply of shingle from the board’s new pit to private persons was discussed. It was decided that the board’s policy should be to conserve its resources, and in consequence applications from ratepayers only would be considered, and these on their individual merits. A charge of Is per yard would be made for all shingle sold, with the proviso that customers would be required to do the work of stripping the surface of the pit if required by the board.

The work had been done economically and efficiently at a cost of approximately sad per square yard, as compared with 6*d during the previous year, the resultant saving being approximately £32. A great improvement was the completion of the work on the circle, which had been treated with bitumen and shingle, and had stood up to a test without disclosing fault. Mr. A. E. Barr Brown, in reporting to the board, stated that during the last winter period the roads in the town district had kept in very good repair owing to the dry weather conditions. The board’s funds for road maintenance were consequently favourably situated, and Mr. Barr j Brown outlined proposals for work j to be undertaken before the forth- . coming winter set in. The programme consisted of shingling most . of the by-roads in the town district. I It was resolved to commence this ) work immediately. The board also j approved a proposal to tarseal certain corners of its roads which were wearing. ;
