“TIME AND TIDE-”
THE pointed discussion at the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday is welcome evidence that business people of Putaruru are realising that opportunities lie at the gates of the town which if seized as the result of combined effort will result in increased trade to all concerned. The idea that business can be sought and obtained by towns as distinct from the individual firm is not a new one. It has been practised successfully by other communities in New Zealand, and though not universally adopted in this country it is quite a common method of business procedure in America. Unity always makes for strength, and such community efforts carry much more weight and are far more easily organised by a representative body of businessmen than if left to one or two. Things worth while seldom happen ; towns, however, by considered and sustained effort may be built up just like private businesses. Clean and attractive streets laid out in accordance with modern townplanning ideas, and studded with brilliant lights in the business area, have long ago proved to be a paying proposition where adopted. Further methods, as suggested in another column, have been and are being used by towns far larger than Putaruru with great success. All that is' wanted is the enthusiastic and combined effort of business people, so that the opportunities which are at present within reach may be grasped ere they pass a%vay to be no longer available to those to whom they were once offered.
