PASSING FROM BEHIND.

NEED FOR USING HORN. What a lot of trouble could be prevented if drivers exercised a little more care when passing another car on the road. The thing to do, as everyone knows, is to blow your horn before accelerating, but, although the knowledge is universal, the practice is not. It is a common thing these days, sometimes when there Is a train of cars, for a man to shoot past before giving a warning. It is not for one moment suggested that every driver does this, but quite a number do. Although blowing the horn is but a small matter, some drivers will persist in dashing past before signalling the driver in front. It means that to save a second’s effort drivers of this description risk injury not only to themselves but to the occupants of two cars. If the car in front were to swing out, and the driver might easily do so not knowing that there is anyone behind, a serious collision might occur. Instances of this disinclination to use the horn are not occasional, in fact they are rather frequent. Evidence of this may he found on any main route to a seaside at any week-end. This brings to mind another silly practice. That is, where one car passes another, occupants wave tantalisingly at the passengers in the vehicle which has been left behind. If the driver is a youth, he immediately sets out in pursuit at a pace which to say the least is not safe. His opponent immediately responds, and a race develops. Probably within a few miles a couple more cars have joined in, menacing every vehicle on the road. Every sensible driver j should, and probably does, refuse to , respond to these ridiculous taunts. j
