The conduct of some of the unemployed men in Christchurch has a tendency to alienate the sympathy of the general public for the unemployed as a whole. Though there are unfortunately many genuine cases of distress through inability to obtain work, some men show reluctance to accept employment, except at excessive rates. It was mentioned at a local body meeting- thai several men had gone to North Canterbury, to engage in harvesting and that because the farmer would not give them 5s an hour for stooking they went back to Christchurch. “ They want the stooking in Cathedral Square,” observed another member.
