MATAMATA COUNTY.

WORK FOR THE MONTH.

The Engineer’s Report

The county engineer (Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald) reported as follows to the Matamata County Council at the meeting on Friday:— “ The horse teams and grader have moved from Turanga-o-moana to the eastern end of the Buckland road and they will be employed for some considerable time in the locality of Hinuera. The tractor and grader has been over practically the whole of the Maungatautari roads and have now moved into Karapiro riding, where they will be employed for some time. A small amount of grading has been done by Cole and Patersen in Tokoroa and Waotu areas respectively. Henderson is still grading* the Tapapa-Mamaku highway, which, as a result of preliminary ploughing, is very soft.

“ The metalling of Waharoa-Taura-nga road has made good progress, the first coating being nearly complete. The highway from Waharoa to Wardville corner and the Wardville road have been scarified and refaced. Metalling of Taumangi road with Te Kuiti shingle is well under way. O’Rourke Bros, did not commence the metalling of Tirau-Putaruru road with Waihou shingle by the specified time, and the contract was handed over to Kinnear, who now has the work about half completed. Metal supplies for Waiomou loan have again been stopped owing to financial considerations; the worst lengths have been coated ancl supplies of metal have been stored along the road for use as necessary during the winter. Petersen’s road linking Pulieturua with the Putaruru-Arapuni road is now coated with shingle from Bent’s pit and the coating of the road from Puketurua towards Horahora is well in hand. Slow progress continues to be made with the surfacing* of the Mamaku highway. Considerable quantities of shingle have been scooped from the river at Okauia for loan works east of the hot springs. “ Tenders have been called and are returnable on the 17th inst. for the following works:—42, construction of filling across swamp on Nicholson’s road; 43, shingle for the road past Selwyn school; 44, shingle for the wet length of Waiomou-Tapapa road adjoining the Waiomou metal; 46, shingle for parts of old Tauranga road at Te Poi.

“ At several points on the TirauCainbridge highway the formation is becoming very narrow as a result of stock wearing off the outer edges and these places will in a short time, if not attended to, become dangerous during wet weather. It is proposed to build up the road at these points as labour becomes available from other works.

“ Survey pegs indicating the line of the road from Horahora to the Waitete stream have, in company with settlers interested, been located as directed by the council. It is understood that the Public Works Department has in hand the surveying of a deviation for this road so as to have the Waite te crossing* away from the point where the Arapuni works will flood the country.”—Adopted. -
