SLAUGHTER LICENSER.

(TO THK. KDITUR.)

Sir,— In subleisder given in vour issue of Friday last, dealing wiili ih« question of granting a slaughter-house license to Mr Lloitouiley, you say you think that the County Council treated the Conn Board with litter contempt. Sow, Sir. I, on behalf of myself ami colleagues, dis rl.uui having the slightest intention of treating the Town Hoard as suggested by you. —1 aiu, Ac., Jon Vile.

[Perhaps Mr Vile is right—tlvere may haw bet n no intention on the oera-ion in question to treat the down ltoerii with contempt. Some inrtn her* of the Conned, however, are very fond ef treating the Hoard in anything nut a courteous manner; but we will (ay that Mr Vile has not been amongst these.—Kt>. S.

LICENSING MATTERS. (to the editor.)

Kir. —Mr T). Crewe’s little missive in your last issue is, 1 think, just such a contribution as nine ineu out of every ten would have expected him to write oil such an important subject, as there is nothing in it —-unless a little ” lioorack ” may be considered something. Mark, he begins it by telling us that which everybody knows, aud ends it by asking fur more information so as to ass.et him “ to clear up the would-be mystery in licensing blatters." To uiy mmd (las ia a very guileless suggestion, and if ( did not know David very well, I should very likely rollelude that lie was in a bit ef a fog, or that living m the Village Settlement had mollitiod the quality of Ins cuteneee. Hut, agaui, tile few linos which occupy tho epuco between the top ami bottom of his epistle contain two statouients which the most simple-minded amongst us will not bo imposed upon with for a moment. First ho says, • I emphatically deny having anything to do either directly or indirectly with the matter," and secondly, " As a matter of fact I have not troubled myself about licensing affairs since my victory on the ‘Jth June." Now, as to the first of these quotations, let me say that if Mr Crewe had sold out all his interest in the Club Hotel aud was now busy building churches in the settlement w ith the pro ceeds, I should possibly have accepted this statement without question; but so long as he remains proprietor of tile Club, amt does not build churches, I think wo will he safe in concluding that he is and will be very much interested “ directly and indirectly” in licensing matters in I’ahiatua. As to his " matter of fact,” it is thoroughly characteristic, amt gives us a fair idea of the disregard some jieople Ivave for facts and their own veracity. Now, Sir, 1 think I have said enough concerning the contents of David’s last effusion to show that anything it does con tain is of very little value to the community. Tho fact seems to be that David has come out on a fishing expedition, aud the chimsym ss of his artifices are really laughable. Fancy him trying lo catch a spry trout w ith a big boo tied to the end of a sapling (large enough for Goliath to wield) and you have a fair analogy ef David’s stupidity on the present occasion. —1 am, Ac.,

Alex. Ref.se. R-S- —I would L>e glad if seme one (wlio is not too clever by half) would try to justify the conduct of tlw* licensed victuallers in your next issue, ami let them take their stand on the broad ground of public utility. A. R. (TO TIIH EDITOR), Sre, —My first thought on reading Mr Crewe’s epistle in vour la.-d issue was. Wily does lie ask of me to deny that it was tile intention of some ot the commit* tee who were ousted to close hits hotel, seeing that I was not a member of that committee ? Rut on further thought it appears that he assumes that it was the intention of Messrs Hughes, Sedcolc, Naylor, Wilson, and Reese (when nominated) to close his hotel if electod. Now, Sir, if Mr Crewe can take comfort from a denial to that, Ido dony it.—l am, Ac., J. D. Wilson. ARDOR DAY —INFORMATION WANTED. (TO THE EDITOR). Sir, —After reading your report of the Arbor Day proceedings, and the list of trees planted. I was surprised to tint! that two nice specimens of Wellington ia (iigan tia which I had forwarded among other trees to the Chairman of the I’ahiatua County, were not included in the list of trees planted. I should like to know, Kir, if tho trees mentioned were planted, and by whom. Can you kindly supply 1 the information through your valuable columns and oblige, yours Ac.,
