The Grain Market.
The Melbourne Argus of a few days ago, in its commercial columns, refers to the wheat and oats markets as follows :—The position of the wheat market continues to be unfavourable for shipping prospect s, and in one instance an engagement which had been formed has been cancelled, the charterers Dot caring to face the difficulty of our markets. In another, a veseel. which it was expected would be taken up for wheat, goes on the berth as a general ship. Two causes are operating to discourage intending shippers, the first being that the English price will not give cover for the price now realising here, the second being that the admixture of shrivelled and rusty with good wheat has, on the average, been large in the receipts from the country up to the present. It has not, in fact, been found possible as yet to make up a sample to send to England to respresent the fair average quality of the season. Possibly the general character of the crop will improve es deliveries increase, end it will certainly be ’to the advantage of farmers and dealers to net their best efforts to sort out their parcels as far
as possible. As matters stand at present. iniiler* am compelled to their right to reject and to a far larger extern li an has been usual in the past. Oat* am a »LaJ« easier, and fa r aahe of New Zealand stout have been mad# at 8s Id to 8s Bd. an occasional parcel fetching 8* Bsd. Shipping bus.n«s« ha* been done at 2* under bond. Them are numerous complaints of the dirtiness and irregularity of the Victorian oa's now coming into the market, climatic surroundings having, during the season, been ad verse to clean tillage. From some of districts, a disap|K>intiiig yield is reported, and on the whole it is evident that the Melbourne market must for another year fall back upon New Zealand supplies to a considerable extent. The growing crop* in Now Zealand are reported upon very favourably, and they promise to lie early, which is run'king New Zealand shippers anxious to be rid of the old crop.
