Milch Cows.

In a recent issue of tbe Queenslander it was stated that the shorthorns bad. as a breed, proved themselves superior to all other breeds as dairy cattle in Kugland. Tbe results of the milking trials at the dairy show in I>ondoii. since received, corroborate the statement in a remarkable degree, remarks our contemporary. Tbe number of cows entered for trial was 58, judging was carrn-d out by a system of points, and the results were decidedly 111 favor of tbe shorthorns. In the matter of weight of milk they were greatly superior. Tbe first prize pure bred shorthorn gave 67.511) of milk for the day, and the second prize unpedigrwed shot thorn 57.H16. while the highest record of any of the Channel Island breed, a Guernsey, gave only Hft.Olb. In the matter of fat in tiie milk, the champion cow —a shorthorn was 2.1M18 agaiu-t ..73 of the highest test of the Channel Island cows. The result of the trials went to show that not ouly as a milkman - breed, but also for butlennakmg. the superiority of* any other bre»sl over tbe for tbe dairy has not yet been established. and tins is all llie more satisfactory that no other breed of cattle has been so widely disseminated over tbe world. The trials brought to light the fact that the evening milk was m

almost ull instance* richer in butter fat than that of the morning. This is probably due to tiie fact that cows have access to more and richer food during # the day than at night. It is hut fair to the Channel Island cattle to slate that size wa not taken into oonsui.ra tiou in the trials. The Jerseys and Guernseys are much smaller than the shorthorns, and it is staled that they do not consume so muob food, so that for the quantity of food consumed it is n it improbable that the Channel Island c ittle give a greater proportion of milk aud butter.
