Mr W. C. Smith adiirenheil the electors in tue Gorge on Saturday. The meeting whs fairly attended, about 60 being present. Mr Malion occupied the chair. Mr Smith made his speech j«hort, and re-dciivered, in substance, hie Woodville address, which doubtless has been read in tile local paper's full report. The matters lie touched upon having already been reported, it is unnecessary to report all his remarks. Mr Smith was particularly desirous of impressing on the minds of the electors the necessity of their supporting Sir Julius Vogel and the present Government, if they wished to see the Government railway works completed. He pointed out the absolute necessity of the electors giving him their whole support in the coining contest with Mr Baker ( who he looks upon as his sole competitor, regarding the other two candidates' chanoes of being returned as very vague J,
At the conclusion of Mr Smith's address several questions were asked. In reply the candidate said :—He did not know what had become of the petition aigned by upwards of 30,0CX) Roman Catholics for subsidy for denominational education.
Was formerly a shareholder in the Evening News ; was not now.
Had nothing to do with dischargs of Mr Carr. Mr Stewart being the senior man was retained, and Mr Carr discharged with allowance.
Was iu favor of2J per cent, being struck ofT totalisalor and given in aid of hospital and charitable institutions.
Was not true that he voted against the Government when defeated. He voted for it.
Hie vote would go, if returned, to help tax the equattera. The other qnestione were unimportant. A vote of thanks and confidence was proposed and carried. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed tho proceedings.
