A 10ft. model of the “unsinkable ship,” invented by Mr W. G. Thomas, ox Dunedin, to which extended reference has already been made in The 1 Post, is now on view in premises at Newtown, and. has attracted a considerable amount of attention. The model, which is a beautiful specimen of minute marine architecture, graphically illustrates the inventor’s idea—an underslung ship instead of the present style of block hull. Under the new system the floating power comes from the surface—the design is to build three ships in one—so that if the underslung portion of the structure should be damaged or perforated, the 1 superstructure is capable of floating “on its own,” sc to speak, instead of the superstructure being dependent On the submerged portion of the vessel. The inventor claims that under his system greater speed can be attained owing to the decreased water-resistance, besides which a system of interchangeable ballast tanks serves to keep the vessel on an even keel to a far greater extent than in the present design. The interchangeable ballast-tanks also serve to very considerably minimise the rolling of the vessel. In addition, Mr Thomas ' has invented a lifeboat, which, ho claims, when thrown into the sea from any position, will right itself automatically. it also is built on the underslung principle.
