THE WAR LOAN.

The time in which, application may be made to subscribe in the War Loan is now very short—Monday, 15th inst. —and it is to -be hoped that all who have money to spare—be it much/, or little—will not allow that date to pass without having done their bit towards making up the nine and a half millions. The response in the past has been liberal, but the needs of the future are still more urgent. New Zealand's future, as well as the future of Britain and her Allies now hangs in the balance, and money as well as men is required to turn the scale and to secure a margin of safety. Without the fullest co-operation of the individual the State cannot carry out its plans for the safety of the country. It is the duty of. every citizen at the present critical stage of the world war to assist the Government in every way possible, and the present need is money. In the words of the Minister of Finance: "It seems a strange thing that men *can lay down their lives so readily—can voluntarily step out of the glorious sunshine into the terrible shadow of death. Month after month we see them go; but how many of us ask ourselves what we can do to turn the tide of men back from the shadow into the sunshine ? Or perhajs we have asked ourselves the question and have really thought that we were helpless—that, caught in the cruel clutches of a monster Fate, we could only wait and see. If I tell yon that you are not helpless, and' that your opportunity to prove the cincerity of your impulses has come, will you act on it? Everyone can help. Will you not give your money? No, not give—lend! The men give their lives, but you are only asked to lend your money. The smallest sum helps, because small sums have a wonderful way of swelling into a mighty torrent of gold when they are rolled into the same stream. "United we stand; divided we fall." United our men, day by day, march into battle. Shall we let our money be divided so that the union of our comrades goes for nothing?" Interview - your postmaster to-day, and he will show you how you can assist to win the war.
