AN EXPLANATION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Exception having been taken to the report of what took place at the meeting of the Patriotic Society held in the public library on Monday evening, the 25th ult., I will as nearly as I can give tho pith of what was said by me on that occasion. I recorded an emphatic protest against moneys raised in tho district for patriotic purposes being sent away without going through tho local Patriotic Society, which is a recognised body. Not having passed through the Society's books such moneys arc not credited to the district in which they are raised, and this tended to convey the impression of a want of confidence in the secretary. I also referred to the bad manner in which the Patriotic Society's meetings were attended, the average number present being only five members, inclusive of its secretary, and I suggested that the whole thing be reorganised with an executive of five members. The foregoing met with tho approval of those present and it was decided to call a public meeting at an early date. To prevent misunderstandings in the future, it is to be hoped that all patriotic workers will take a greater interest in what is being done and roll up to the meeting when called. Yours etc., J. B. LOVELL, Hon. Secretary, Havelock Patriotic Society.
