WELCOME HOME.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The capacity of the Town Hall was severely taxed last Thursday evening, when a Welcome Home was given by the citizens to Quarter-Master Sergeant Miles Barrowclough, Corporal E. Pope, Privates Len. Bovey, Noel Couper, and G. Wilson, who have recently returned from the front. It is estimated that fully 300 people were present, including many visitors from Carluke, Deep Creek, Canvastown, and other parts of the district. Mr W. H. Smith (chairman of the Town Board) presided, and in his opening remarks extended a warm welcome to the returned soldiers. Short addresses wore also given by the Rev. A. H. Heron and Mr E. J. Roche, to which Quarter-Master Sergeant Barrqwclough ably responded on behalf of himself and the other guests of the evening. Musical items were given by Mesdames William|, L. Smith, Marriott, and Martin, Misses Wooster, Cora Farnell, and A. Orsman, and the Messrs J, R. Akersten, J. Irvine, C. Turner. The items of Miss Farnell and Mrs Marriott were particularly well received, and both had to respond to an encore. Mesdames E. H. Smith, Williams, and Miss L. Orsman, were the accompanists.
At the conclusion of the musical party of the proceedings supper was handed round. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which was kept up till about 2.30 a.m.
