HAVELOCK TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday, the following members attending: Messrs W. H. Smith (in the chair) W. H. Marriott, and W. H. Buckman.

Mr C. H. Mills notified the Board

that he had sold section 194 HavclockMahakipawa road, and asked that his name bo removed from the rate roll in respect to that section. Mr A. J. Brown wrote disclaiming responsibility for the rent of gravel-pit road section near wharf, having given up the use of it. On the motion of Mr Marriott the clerk was instructed to inform Mr Brown that the Board did not hold him further responsible. The Board also decided to clear the section of noxious weeds. A circular-letter was read from the Auckland City Council asking the Board to endorse a resolution in reference to the disposal of Samoa after the war.

In reference to the letters previously received from Mesdames E. H. Smith and Orsman offering to assist in the arrangements for the reception of returned soldiers, Mr Marriott moved that (ihese ladies be written to and informed that as a committee had been formed with power to add to their number the matter was held in abeyance. — Carried.

Resignations as members of the Board were read from Messrs E. H. Smith and W. H. Orsman. On the motion of Mr Buckman the resignations were accepted with regret. In answer to a question the clerk stated that a general election of the Board was due to bo held in September next.

A letter was read from Mr Barnes (engineer in charge of the clcetrie lighting installation at Picton) in reference to the securing of a plant of a size suitable for Havelock’s requirements, and if entrusted with the work the light could be installed within three months.

In reply to the chairman the clerk stated that he had given Mr Barnes no indication that the work, if proceeded with, would be placed in his hands. He (Mr Barnes) understood that it was the intention of the Board to call for tenders.

The clerk then read the special license issued by the Government, which sanctioned the installation of the temporary scheme. It now remained for the Board to decide whether the necessary further steps should bo taken to go on with the work. The chairman referred in scathing terms to the action of the retiring members, who had resigned over a trivial matter when the important question of lighting the town required the decision of a full Board. On the motion of Mr Marriott the clerk was instructed to secure a signed petition from the ratepayers for authority to borrow on a basis of a £I9OO scheme, and present at next meeting. The clerk reported that an inspection had been made of all water-taps in the town, and most of the leaks had been remedied. It was resolved that consumers who still had leaky taps on their premises be written to and failing the waste being checked, the Board effect the necessary repairs and charge to the users. Mention was made that the condition of the reservoir was again getting unsatisfactory and the clerk was instructed to have it cleaned out after the first good fall of rain. It was decided to put a man on for three days cleaning up the cemetery. Accounts amounting to £49 6s 2d were passed for payment.
