THE PELORUS GUARDIAN and Miners’ Advocate. TUESDAY, MAY 29, 1917. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Good second-hand engine wanted. A sitting of the District Medical Board was neld in Havelock on hriday, when men drawn in the recent ballot were examined. It is stated lhat an unusually large proportion of those examined were passed through ..as medically fit. The Wairau River Commission resumed its sitting at Blenheim yesterday, and will probably not e< nclude its business until this afternoon. At a special meeting of the Pelorus Road Board on Saturday afternoon Messrs Storey, Kennington, and the secretary (Mr C. A 'Court Opie) were deputed to attend the proceedings to watch the Board's interests.

Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Opie in Blenheim, the meeting of the Pelorua Hack Racing Club Committee could not be held last evening, and will take place on Thursday evening next.

The local postmaster advises that the address “Zeaclub” has been registered as a telegraphic code address for the “New Zealand Soldiers’ Club, Russell Square, London, W.C.’’ The sum of #2.0 has been forwarded by the Havelock Suburban Euchre Club to the High Commissioner, London, to bo handed to theY.M.C,A. in France. The proceeds of the social recently held at Mrs Andrews’ residence is included in the above sum.

The lad Allan Patterson, who was taken back to Nelson last week by Constable Douglas, was charged with the theft of the bicycle upon which he had made his escape from licensed service at Motueka. Owing to the previous good character of the boy no conviction was recorded against him, and he was transferred to Waereroa Industrial School Farm.

Speaking at the Town Hall on Friday night on the subject of the Pelorus Road Board methods, Mr Corry stated that after the nominations for the North Bank elections had closed, certain names of voters we]re altered on the roll at a special meeting of the Board which was presided over by Mr gtorey—one of the candidates. “He wanted to make sure of it,’’ said Mr Corry. “He was elected, of course, but it is easy to be elected when you make your own roll!” A satisfactory explanation of what actually took place was given by the secretary of the Board, Mr C. A’Court Opie, who was also the returning officer. In the course of his address at : the Town Hall on Friday evening, Mr Corry stated that most absurd untruths were being circulated in reference to hospital expenditure. He said one individual assured him that the Wairau Hospital used to light < their fires by pouring sugar on the wood. Another that the Board had spent £I4OO on a carpet for the Maternity Home, and a third that all the fire-places and grates in the new ward had to be pulled out already as they were most unsatisfactory.

There was a very large attendance at the re-appearance of Fullers’ Pictures at the Town Hall on Saturday. A number of interesting and varied subjects were screened in support of the star picture drama entitled “The Price of Happiness.” The programme was shown at Canvastown on the previous evening, but owing to the exceptionally heavy rain the attendance was very small. A specially good programme is promised for Saturday, June 9th in Haveloek, when ‘ I A Modern Joan of Arc” will be screened. Sufferers from Bronchitis or Asthma will get speedy relief by taking “NAZOL” qn lump sugar, or inhaling it through ‘ a Nazol Inhaler. 60 doses Is fid.
