HAVELOCK HARBOUR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday, the following members attending: Messrs H. M. Reader (in the chair), W. H. Smith, W. H. Orsinan, and W. H. Buckman. Apology was received from Mr Owen Passau for non-attendance.

The Board adopted Mr Passau's recommendation to replace the present steps at wharf (which now in a rather decayed condition),’and to put hand-railing on the inside for the greater convenience of users. It was also decided to at once erect terrace steps on northern breastwork to facilitate the landing of sheep. The secretary reported satisfactory progress of wharf repairs, and authority was given to procure the timber required for further work above the original contract, including about 500 feet for new steps and landing.

It’ was also decided that all the old timber removed from wharf be stacked, and the disposal of it later be left in the hands of the secretary. The secretary reported that a start had been made (according to instruction-) with the excavating work on new channel line between Cullen’s Point and the wharf, but owing to. the unexpected heavy nature of the stuff to be removed he deemed it advisable to suspend operations until he had submitted a further report. The bank to bo removed consisted of rather a hard

crust of IS inches to 2 feet which did not readily solve in water. It was pointed out that to form a bank of this material at either side of the channel would be courting trouble with launch owners. ' The secretary recommended the use of punts for the removal of the material excavated.

Mr Orsman was of opinion that the heaps of mud would soon be levelled by thj action of the tide, and moved that the men engaged on the work be instructed to throw the material on to the banks of the channel. The motijn was defeated.

After some further discussion, the chairman moved a notice of motiOn that the question of deepening the new channel be adjourned and discussed at next meeting, and that the secretary be instructed in the meantime to ascertain the terms of hire for use of punts.

A few small accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
