MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

SITTING AT BLENHEIM.

The “Express” reports: A sitting of the Canterbury Military Service Appeal Board, comprising Messrs J. S. Evans, S.M. (chairman), j. D . Million, and E. C. Studholrae, was held in the Blenheim Courthouse on Friday afternoon. The original appointment was for 11 o’clock in the morning, at which hour a considerable number of persons concerned in the proceedings assembled; but the Board was delayed in its journey from Kaikoura, and the sitting was fixed for the afternoon.

Captain Pilkington, military representative, and Captain Allison, group officer, were in attendance. The following appellants appeared:—

Albert Newton Avery, farmer, Fairhall; application for an extension of time; granted to June 24th. Charles Blake,-Blenheim, was proved to be over age.

William Bocvcr, employed by the Dominion Goldraining Development Company at Deep Creek; adjourned sine die. Mr L. Humphries, manager for the company, gave evidence. Leonard Brayshaw, market gardener and nurseryman, Blenheim; adjourned sine die, case to be reviewed before the calling of the Second Division. Alfred Bertram Cartwright, employed by the Dominion Goldmining Developing Company, Deep Creek; adjourned sine die, certain conditions as to work being imposed on the applicant in view of representations made by the company’s manager. Alfred James Dalton, farmer, Upton Downs; appellant represented that if his brother were left alone to work the property it w-ould not be practicable to carry out a former undertaking to grow 100 acres of wheat; reserved for inquiries. James Henry Carter, wharf-laborer, Picton; had enlisted and had been rejected three times; adjourned sine die, to be called on with the men of the same class in the Second Division.

Bryan T. R. Greensill, farmer, Mahan; application for extension of time; adjourned sine die, appellant to go before the Second Division. Gerald Nairn, proprietor of motorcycle business, Blenheim; left in charge by his brother, who vent to England and joined the Royal Flying Corps; adjourned for one month.

Walter Francis Newport, storeman, Blenheim; adjourned sine die, case to be reviewed before the calling of the Second Division.

James Paul O'Connor, farmer, Ward; working on his father’s place and also engaged in contract ploughing; adjourned for fuller enquiries. Daniel Thomas Ryan , farmer, Marama; leave granted to July 21st.

Walter William Bcdwell, Anglican clergyman, Picton; appeal made by the Bishop of Nelson; Archdeacon Grace appeared in support; adjourned sine die.

Alexander Murdock Davies, farmer, Kaituna; evidence was given by the appellant and his father (who lodged the appeal) appeal dismissed; allowed to June 20th.

Thomas Nutt, Deep Creek; employed as a scheolite miner. Evidence was also given by A. B. Alford, manager for the Mountain Camp Company; adjourned sine die, instructions being given to the manager that any change of employment must be notified. The ease of an appellant whoso address was given as Christchurch, and who did not appear, was adjourned to that centre.

In the case of a farmer at Elaine Bar, adjourned from the previous sitting, there was no appearance of the appellant, and a further adjournment was made to the next sitting.

One appellant was stated to be in hospital suffering from scarlet fever. The case was adjourned for three months,

Several cases were withdrawn or dismissed for non-appearance. The majority were those, of men who had been medically classed for home service.

The name of a man—a labourer at Blenheim —who had notified himself as a conscientious objector, was on the list of appeals. He did not appear, and it was stated that he had not submitted himself for medical examination. The case was dismissed. The Board rose at 4 o’clock.
