FARMERS’ UNION.

WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE. The Wellington Provincial Conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union u'ill be held at the Coronation Hall, Martoii, on May 29th and 30th. Among a lengthy list of important remits are several dealing with the matter of placing returned soldiers on the land, and three suggesting other taxes in place of the excess profits tax. Other interesting remits are as under:—

“That the branch considers the but-ter-fat levy imposed by the Government on one section of dairy farmers totally unjust, and urges the conference to use every endeavour to secure its removal. ’ ’

“That this meeting condemns the imposition of an export duty on cheese as a great injustice to cheese producers, of administering the tax will take a large proportion of the amount collected, and the benefits to butter consumers very small compared with the cost to the farmers.”

“That legislation be brought down which will be effective in preventing the aggregation of land by men already holding large estates.” “That crops of wheat and potatoes grown this season be exempted from income tax, and from excess profits tax, in order to stimulate the growing of these crops.”
